Benefits of LED Light Bulbs in the House

Without an iota of doubt, light is very important as far as human survival is concerned. Even plant and animal can hardly survive without light because of its reflective and alluring capabilities.

After God’s given sunlight, human beings have another ways of generating their own artificial light to overcome darkness during the night, but the methods vary and it depends on the level of income. A low income earner or people living below the poverty line will rather go for incandescent candles or bush lanterns.

They are very good as a reading lamp because of its high reflective power, but since it is a heat dependent appliance it can be useful where heat is need for concentration on the part of the reader.

Home LED Lighting – Advantages And Disadvantages

With all of the media attention given to environmental issues these days, it is widely known that the electricity that we use everyday is contributing toward harmful greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. If you believe in global warming, then you realize this is one of the issues that is exacerbated by these greenhouse gas emissions. While some people lead their lives not worried about these issues, there are many people who are making the small contributions that they can toward alleviating this problem. Using LED lighting is one of these methods.

For those out there who have never heard of it, LED stands for Light-Emitting Diodes and is a type of low emission lighting that doesn’t contribute to these problems. The only problem is that it is not yet a part of the mainstream lighting market, but it is growing fast. Like anything of this nature, this type of lighting does have its advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages include:

  • A very low energy consumption level. This contributes directly to savings on your light bill!
  • Lasts much longer than traditional lighting. It has been known to last up to 50,000 hours. That’s way more than any other available lighting type.
  • Can easily resist thermal shocks and vibrations. Normal light bulbs are useless when you drop or bump them. Not LED lights.
  • Great for spotlighting due to a directional distribution. All of the light molecules can easily be sent in one direction without losing energy.
  • There is no infrared lighting from LED lights. And there is no UV radiation, which is better for you and the environment.
  • Contains no mercury making it safer.
  • Cool to the touch so no need to worry about burning or turning off the lights for 30 minutes before you change them.
  • They make great colored lights from anywhere on the light spectrum

Disadvantages include:

  • A very limited variety and selection for your home compared to other types of lighting.
  • Hard to find in smaller towns where consumers may have a smaller interest in this lighting alternative.
  • Significantly more expensive than regular lighting and not budget conscious.
  • Not good for residential flood lighting. You will need extra equipment to make this work
  • Although they are available in many colors, the quality of the colors is not quite as good as with regular lighting.

LED lights can be a very useful tool in your home, especially if you are environmentally conscious or want to save money in the long run. These savings can really add up. If you were to run a single reading lamp with an LED bulb 12 hours a day for a year, it would cost less than 50 cents, and you wouldn’t have to replace the bulb. But even though they give off more light than a standard bulb, you will still need more of them pointing in many different directions to light up a room because the light is very directional.

And in the short run, LED lighting is not nearly as immediately affordable as traditional lighting. The cost problem becomes worse if you are changing out the existing lights as opposed to starting new. So whether or not these lights are of good use in your home depends on how you feel about them, and whether or not you are willing to make the necessary investment.

Outdoor Light Bulbs For Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor Light Bulbs for outdoor lightings are specially made to take moisture and take the variation of temperatures. Outdoor spots and floods generally need light bulbs specially designed for that purpose. You should look for PAR light bulbs for these applications. PAR light bulbs are made in incandescent, halogen or compact fluorescent versions. It’s important to know that some compact fluorescent light bulbs can not be used outdoors because they won’t ever come on in really cold conditions. Some just don’t like cold temperatures. Many spot fixtures that are enclosed may use MR type bulbs and these are primarily used for walkway lighting. You can find MR light bulbs that are halogen and now LED.

Deck Lights

When it comes to deck lighting, there are some cool new LED options out there. You could also have some post lighting needs around your deck or entertaining area. We’ve already explained how to light post lights. The main areas you want to light on decks are the steps and edges of the deck. Small puck size lights can be used for these areas. They don’t flood the area with light but will insure that no one gets hurt if they are walking across your deck in the evening hours. Philips has a really cool DIY kit that you can install after a deck is built and works off a remote.

Swimming Pool Lights

Light Bulbs used for swimming pools are also ideal for use in waterfall lighting, fountain lighting and reflection pools. It is crucial that specialty light bulbs be used for these applications. The bulbs will be made with hard, shatter-resistant glass that withstands thermal shock and vibration.

Your swimming pool installation company will more than likely design your swimming pool lighting plan. All you’ll need to do is pull out an expired bulb and replace what you’ve found. If what you have doesn’t exist any longer, the types of bulbs currently available in the Philips family that are made especially for swimming pools are the following: G-30, PAR-56, R-20 and R-40. These range in width from 1 ½” to 7″ in diameter and are used in either 12 or 120 volt applications. All are incandescent light bulbs.

Sconce and Covered Lighting

What do we mean by sconce and covered lighting? Anything that falls under the eve of your home, would be covered lighting. If you are wanting to light a sconce, probably beside your front door, you have lots of options. There are incandescent light bulbs, halogen and compact fluorescent options. It’s important to measure the space you have inside the fixture. Know the height, width and size of screw in base you need (medium base or candelabra base).

Another type of lighting you will probably need under the eve of your home is some sort of spot or flood light. If these are under the eve and don’t get direct rain exposure, you have a lot more options to choose from. If your fixtures are on the corners of your roof and get direct rain fall, you’ll want to use PAR light bulbs like in landscape lighting. Because of their hard glass lens, these light bulbs are made for the weather.

Outdoor lighting can be a little intimidating to tackle. Bottom line, all incandescent light bulbs and all halogen light bulbs can be used outside. Most in covered fixtures and any PAR can be used in an area that gets direct rain or snow. Some compact fluorescent light bulbs can be used outdoors but will need to be specially made for outdoor lighting applications. Armed with the knowledge of what light bulbs you can and can not use in each application will make the job a great deal easier.

G9 Light Bulbs – Perfect Lighting For Indoor and Outdoor Use

Incandescent bulbs, in layman’s terms, refer to quite simple structures that give a radiant sheen and steady light. An incandescent bulb’s core has two metal contacts at the bottom of the base, and this is where it gets its power. Incandescent lighting devices are designed with a wide array of voltages and sizes, ranging from 1.5 volts to about 300 volts. These devices usually do not entail any external regulating equipment and are noted to incur much lower manufacturing costs. In addition, incandescent lights such as the halogen G9 light bulbs, work well on both alternating and direct currents. These qualities help to make the incandescent lamp a popularly-used household and commercial lighting material. It also is a preferred material for portable lighting uses, whether they are utilized as car headlamps, table lamps or electric flashlights, a well as for outdoor and indoor advertising and decorative lighting.

According to lighting experts, halogen light bulbs are essentially incandescent lamps in their design and construction, and operate relatively like standard light bulbs. However, it would be solely up to the user to use the appropriate wattage setting in order to attain the desired lighting levels.

For those who have a halogen light fixture outdoors, you’ll notice that when the bulb starts to fade out, the difference would surely be like night and day. LED Torches Vs Incandescent Torches

This is question I do not usually ask myself but if you look into the end of your torch you may be surprised what you see. More and more torches are being made with LED’s and not standard filaments but what are LED’s and why are they so much better? Being a Physics graduate these are questions I should be able to answer, so I will try!

Light Emitting Diodes or LED’s as they are more widely known create light by taking advantage of semiconductor physics. Now you do not need to know much about semiconductors apart from the fact that their conductivity or ability to allow electric current to pass through them can be manipulated to make them very resistant to electric current or conduct electricity like a metal. The LED will be a junction of two different types of semiconductors, one which contains lots of positive charges and one which contains lots of negative charges. We call this a PN (Positive-Negative) junction. Now normally these charges cannot approach each other (as we would expect positive and negative charges to do, attract) but if we apply a voltage across the LED using your AA batteries for example, we can push the positive and negative charges together. When the charges meet they anihalate with each other and the energy is released as light, brilliant!

So why is this better than your standard tungsten filament bulb. Well LED’s are lit solely by the movement of Electrons (the negative charges I have discussed) . They have no filament that will burn out, no toxic materials like mercury or radon gas are required in their production and last up to 60 times longer than incandescent bulbs according to howstuffworks.com. LED’s also do not suffer as dramatically from energy wastage as heat and so in the energy converting into light sense they are more efficient. However single LED’s are not as bright as normal bulbs and so you usually see a cluster of LED’s rather than a single one in any application. It is generally expected that LED’s will replace incandescent bulbs in the future but a lot of work needs to go into making them brighter while keeping them cost effective.

So what does this mean for you and me, the consumers. Well LED’s are more economical, they just are. Heat is an incredible waste in a standard bulb and so any improvements we can make there will be worthwhile. For camping the slight loss in brightness from an LED torch will not be a problem and as you can see with a quick search on Amazon a very basic 17 LED Compact Torch retails for just £3.98! If you want to be more economical, perhaps make your batteries last that little bit longer and do your bit for the environment then choose LED. In fact why not be really environmentally friendly and combine the wind-up torch principle and LED lighting and purchase a LED wind-up torch like the Varta LED Dynamo Light – Wind Up Torch .

How to Convert Your Boat to LED Lighting

You’ve considered running the genset (noisy) more, another solar panel (somewhat pricey), or are maybe even ponying up the benjamins for a wind generator (very pricey and somewhat noisy). It’s not as though you need a lot of power you tell yourself. All you want to achieve is more time cruising and less time at the dock or running the genset. Before you jump in, I have a more cost effective solution for you. Enter the boat LED.

LED is an acronym for Light Emitting Diode. They are an electronic device that generates light and the technology has finally matured enough to make them bright enough, the right color (early white ones were very bluish in their light emission), extremely energy efficient, and quite long lived.

The intensity of light from LEDs is now surpassing incandescent and halogen bulbs.

The colors available are varied but they can now be had in a color referred to as “warm white”. This is a reference to the light color, which tends to be a warmer golden color, rather than the old blue white.

Energy consumption is frequently measured in milliamps. At 12 volts, a 1.3w LED cluster is drawing approximately 110ma. Figure the average CFL bulb draws about ten times that amount but the LED is generally free of or contains very minimal amounts of mercury (look for an RoHS certification).

Expected service life is even more interesting. A decent LED should have a minimum service life of 50,000 hours. If you left the light on that translates to almost eight and a half years on constant duty. This means it will be ultra rare that they will need changing. This is especially nice if you have to climb to replace them.

So how do you replace the lighting on your boat with them? One way would be to replace all the fixtures on your boat with dedicated LED fixtures but the price adds up very quickly and, contrary to what current marketing may like, you may actually like your current fixtures. The simple method is to simply replace the existing light bulbs with LED equivalents. If you have housings that use a G4 halogen bulb for instance, you have lots of options for G4 LED replacements. You’ll only be limited by the space for the bulb and how bright you want it. Pull the halogen out, plug in the LED G4 marine led replacement, repeat as necessary with the other housings and you’re done. It really is that simple. Sure beats wiring another solar panel or wind generator doesn’t it?

Other bulb options exist, not just G4 LEDs. The 1156 LED, 1157 LED, and a number of others are available. The toughest part will be for those rare cases where a 32v electrical system exists (some of the larger early Chris Crafts are an example). 32v is too high for most the 8-30v LEDs and too low for the 120v LEDs. 24v systems can use the same LEDs that 12v systems do, in most cases.

Quality varies, but even most the stuff coming out of China now is ever of pretty decent quality. I’d just make sure they have the European CE and RoHS certifications.

Now, I have a point to be careful of. Be very careful with the navigation lights. There are VERY few bulbs out there that are actually approved by the USCG (United States Coast Guard) for use in navigation lights. There are some, but they are few and far between. Navigation lights are certrified as a combination of bulb and lens and consequently, some combos don’t meet minimum Coast Guard requirements. Furthermore, if you were to be in a collision and the insurance company found out that it was a non-approved combination in your nav lights, you could face the possibility of having your claim denied. Not a good situation to be in. Dedicated LED navigation light fixtures are available as are a few approved LED nav light bulbs.

So, change those bulbs first before you jump into more drastic measures and happy cruising!

The Benefits of LED GU10 Lighting

In recent years, great efforts have been made to create more environmentally friendly products. Light bulbs have been around since Thomas Edison offered the technology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, conventional incandescent lamps are inefficient and use a lot of power. Traditional types work by heating a tungsten filament inside of a glass envelope to thousands of degrees. As the filament heats up, light and heat are produced. These lamps can use a lot of electricity and need to be exchanged frequently when the filament burns out. Recent developments have included compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), which work by exciting molecules of inert gases inside of tubes. They require much less power than incandescent bulbs and last many times longer. But one of the newest technologies is LED GU10 powered bulbs. LED is an acronym for light emitting diode. An LED is a small device made of a semiconductor that emits light when a current passes through it. GU10 LED light bulbs have several advantages over their predecessors.

LED GU10 bulbs are first and foremost very energy efficient and therefore more environmentally friendly. For the amount of illumination that they give off, these new kinds consume very little electricity. By switching to one of these, homeowners can save hundreds of dollars in utility bills over the course of the lamp’s lifetime. Not only that, but the environment will be spared the carbon emissions created by producing electricity at power plants. Also, CFLs can contain harmful chemicals like mercury within them. If they ever crack or are disposed of in an improper manner, they can pollute the environment with toxins.

Another benefit is that they produce very little heat. Incandescent lamps (and CFLs to a lesser extent) can get extremely hot. This can pose safety issues for small children, who may touch the lamp. Also, it reduces the chance of a fire. These kinds remain cool to the touch even after several hours of operation. The reduction in heat produced by these lamps can have a great effect on the temperature of a room, keeping it cooler than if it were lit with more traditional types.

Finally, these new types last a lot longer than incandescent or CFL options. For example, one LED GU10 light can last for up to 30,000 hours of use. In comparison, CFLs last between 6,000 and 15,000 hours depending on the model and manufacturer. Incandescent bulbs have the shortest life spans, lasting a mere 750 to 1,000 hours. Instead of having to purchase bulbs every few months, with these new lighting sources, homeowners can go years between changes.

With new, environmentally friendly lighting solutions available, homeowners have more choices than ever when it comes to selecting lamping that fits into their lifestyles. Choosing energy saving LED lamps can not only save money over the long run, but also help the planet due to their efficiency and low power requirements.

LED Lights – Benefits Over Traditional Lighting

LED lights are becoming increasingly popular in the world of interior design. They offer myriad benefits in the home and as such are rapidly becoming the lighting of choice in homes across the land. Whilst in the past they were a niche form of lighting, LEDs are now more affordable and hence widespread in the domestic setting. But what are the main advantages of LEDs?

The first major advantage has to be the operational life of LEDs. Currently it is estimated that the majority of LEDs is around one hundred thousand hours. In a more tangible format this is around eleven years when the lights are in continuous use. When this is compared to a regular light bulb, with a lifespan of just five thousand hours, the benefit in terms of money saved in the long run is clearly evident.

LEDs also help to save money elsewhere, understandably, as they effectively last longer, the cost of replacing bulbs on a regular basis are greatly reduced. This is particularly the case in the commercial sector, in offices and large buildings where the costs of lighting are magnified due to scale.

Low power consumption is also a significant advantage of using LEDs. If used correctly it is estimated that an LED circuit is capable of achieving almost eight percent efficiency. Once again, when compared with traditional incandescent bulbs, their efficiency is just twenty percent. Fundamentally, LED lighting is a better converter of electrical energy into light rather than heat. Naturally by understanding that eighty rather than twenty percent of your electrical lighting bill is going to actual lighting rather than expendables such as heat, it is possible to save money.

That is not to say that LEDs don’t have their downsides, currently bulbs remain relatively expensive, particularly when compared with traditional bulbs. That said, over time the costs are easily recouped over time. Due to the scale of commercial lighting operations however, these have been the first to adopt LED lighting due to fact savings are achieved faster.

Finally, from a design aspect LED lighting has a range of benefits, especially the range of colours that are available. Different coloured bulbs can even be mixed to create stunning, colour changing effects. Increasingly, the coloured potential of lights has led to their adoption in modern architectural design and garden settings.
