If you saw our original video about converting our RV’s fluorescent lights to LEDs (if not, you can view it here: http://youtu.be/SAMPQrAu0aI ), you may have noticed that it was quite a while before we shared any more tips about switching to LEDs.
The reason for that is because we were experimenting with converting our RV’s other lights (halogen, incandescent and even other fluorescent light options). But it was a bit frustrating, since options for LED color and brightness can be confusing, and many suppliers don’t accurately convey the information you need to choose the color temperature and brightness you want.
Then we heard about a company on the iRV2 discussion forums called M4 Products. The information on their website was really thorough, and the owner’s fast, detailed response to our questions made us confident that his lights would be the right color and brightness.

After trying out all types of lighting, I finally decided to try out the growing popularity of LEDs. Thought they were really expensive so I never really looked into it, to my amaze they were really cheap and I was able to complete this lamp with less than 40$.
The main problem with LEDs is that they heat up ALOT, but by using a simple L-shaped aluminium profile, some thermal paste and a 4$ computer fan, this problem ceased to exist. LED drivers are extremely useful as LEDs require constant current rather than constant voltage. The LED driver was, by far, the most expensive piece in the whole set-up, rounding up to about 15$. You can make a DIY LED driver with a voltage regulator and a resistance but it will never be as good and I decided to avoid the problem.
I decided to use the color sequence, shown in the video, to distribute the three colors of light as best as possible throughout the aquarium. Blue light will help to grow plants tall and strong while red light will help to grow them small and dense. This aquarium has some light demanding carpeting plants so I went with the max amount of light I could use in this small 10gal NANO aquarium. I know the watts per gallon rule isn’t really good for measuring LED light in an aquarium, but in such a small tank I decided to go with it. I applied a 1.5-2 watts of LED light per gallon rule, which sums up to 15-20 watts for a 10gal. This lighting system has 7 3w LEDs (21w).
In Lumen terms:
Each White LED is about 220 lm, each Blue LED is about 24 lm, each Red LED is about 67 lm. This sums up about 995 lm.
The light turned out to work perfectly, plants start pearling almost immediately after I turn it on, the fan keeps the heat sink (aluminum profile) at a really cool level and it makes no sound at all. The shrimp in the tank haven’t been affected by the light change and the plants look better each day.
We’ve seen our chilli plants grow from strength to strength in this grow light battle and the evidence has mounted to the stage where we’re ready to announce the winner of the fight.
LED grow lights have to throw in the towel on this test as HIDs are clearly pronounced king of the jungle. Throughout this battle we’ve kept all factors except the lighting the same, and the difference in vegetative growth between the two plants has even surprised us.
The LED grow lights didn’t do too bad at all and they can clearly grow plants, but the HID grow lights have outperformed them every step of the way,and as far as we’re concerned, HID technology is the only one to choose until LEDs reach the same performance levels.

A brief comparison of LED and compact fluorescent light bulbs. I’ve been replacing some around the house as the CFLs burn out and they are OK, but how well they work depends a bit on the fixture. It’s worth testing before investing (a lot).
LEDs work best in fixtures where the light comes out the end of the bulb (like in a can light) because much of the light in an LED bulb comes out of the round end. However have found that they work almost as well (very acceptable) in some other fixtures where the light from the bulb comes out of the “side” of the bulb. (Horizontal orientation).
The LED bulb runs much cooler for the same about of light (for example a 12 watt CFL vs 7 watt LED). That extra coolness represents heat you don’t have to pay for your air conditioner to pump outside.
For a given wattage, the LED produces much more light, so if you have a fixture that is maxed out at say 12 watts and you need more light, then 12 watts of LED will be much brighter than 12 watts of CFL.
The LED bulb is supposed to last much longer than the CFL (15k hours total life is on the packages for the ones I bought) or 8x the life of an incandescent. So the bottom line is they should last a very long time (good for hard to reach fixtures).
This house was built around 1988. The light fixtures originally had the circular 1950’s style fluorescent tubes with starter and ballasts in them. They were not very bright, required frequent replacement of the parts and ran hot. I changed the fixtures over to screw type sockets (see video here on that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YohZs-dmDc )
and went to 3 x 12 watt CFL bulbs. Since then our electric bill has gone down about 20% and stayed there. We hope to get another 5% – 10% savings by changing to LED bulbs as the CFLs burn out. Correction from the video, we have 115 regular light bulbs, not 63! For comparison, my last smallish house had 44 light bulbs, but also used some of the 3 foot long florescent bulbs and I did not count those.
20140909: UPDATE – we have tried the LED bulbs in the 3 bulb frosted glass fixtures and they are acceptable. Here is the video:
It is a bit dark in the middle, but not as bad as I guessed. The fixture is much cooler to the touch. We will continue to replace the CFLs in all our fixtures with LEDs as the CFLs burn out.
